Please join us in welcoming Dr. Efrén Pérez, Professor in the Departments of Political Science and Psychology at UCLA and Director of the Race, Ethnicity, Politics, & Society (REPS) Lab, as a guest lecturer in PPE 4900: Advanced Seminar in PPE: Racial and Ethnic Politics. This event is open to all members of the university community.
Recent work suggests that solidarity between people of color (PoC) is triggered when a minoritized ingroup believes they are discriminated against in ways similar to another outgroup—often based on alleged foreignness or inferiority. Heightened solidarity is then expected to boost support for policies that benefit minoritized outgroups who are not one’s own—for example, Black adults becoming more pro-Latino, Asian adults becoming more pro-Black, and Latino adults becoming more pro-Asian. In this talk, I discuss my lab’s growing experimental evidence on this proposed mechanism. I then highlight new challenges and opportunities to learn more—both theoretically and methodologically—about interminority solidarity in politics. I conclude by outlining new research agendas to advance our understanding of interminority politics in a multiethnic democracy like the United States.
